Story
The Story Behind the Project
Together with a group of scouts from the Faroe Islands, we raised enough money to help build a small school in James Henry Village.
But from the very beginning, we knew that we didn’t want to simply arrive, build a school, and then leave.
Before anything was decided, we sat down with the people of the village. We listened to their ideas, talked about what they needed, and discussed how a school could best serve their children and their community. Together, we decided where it should be built and how it should be run.
For us, one thing was especially important: this should not feel like a school that had been given to them.
It should feel like their school.
We wanted the people of James Henry Village to be part of creating it from the very beginning. We wanted them to have a sense of ownership and, most importantly, to feel proud of what they were building for their children and for the future of their community.
And that is exactly what happened.
The village came together in a way that was incredible to witness. People collected building materials, contributed whatever time they were able to, and worked side by side to build the school with their own hands.
Our role was to support them. We helped provide the tools and financial resources and offered some guidance when it came to the size and design of the building.
But they built it.
And that is what makes this school so special.
What started with an idea and money raised by a group of people far away in the Faroe Islands became something much bigger. It became a community project — a place created by the people of James Henry Village for their own children.
A place where children can learn, grow, discover new possibilities, and dream about what their future might hold.
Watching the school slowly take shape was incredible, but what touched us the most was seeing the pride on the faces of the people who were building it.
Because in the end, this is not just a school in James Henry Village.
It is their school. Their achievement. And something they can be proud of for many years to come.
